Layers of warm clothing such as fleece or down help you to stay warm, dry, and comfortable regardless of weather conditions. Weather on the water can be unpredictable; being prepared with proper cold weather gear will help you make the most of any sailing excursion.

A good sailing midlayer jacket can be worn under waterproof foul-weather gear. Look for something warm, lightweight, and breathable so if you’re working up a sweat on board you won’t get chilled everytime you take a break.

What is the best clothing for sailing?

Layers are essential. Baselayers should be made of a wicking material so they transfer moisture away from the body. Midlayers are your insulation and trap heat near the body to reduce heat loss. The outer shell is your waterproof layer and will keep wind and water out while maintaining breathability to avoid trapping moisture inside. Footwear should have non-slip and non-marking soles. On a sunny day, consider UV protective clothing and hats to shield your skin from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Is fleece good for sailing?

Fleece is a top choice for insulated sailing gear. Made of 100% polyester, it won’t absorb water so it dries quickly. Fleece also stays warm when wet which makes it a great thermal midlayer to take along on any sailing excursion.

Are sailing jackets warm?

Jackets billed specifically as “sailing jackets” will be waterproof, windproof, and breathable. Some may include insulation while others will be designed as an outer shell under which warm layers should be worn. Look for warming elements such as fleece-lined hand warmer pockets, adjustable cuffs and high-cut, fleece-lined collars to keep the wind out.

What do sailors wear to keep warm?

When you’re going out on a sailboat, layers are the key to keeping warm. In terms of sailing-appropriate midlayers, sailors tend to prefer packable lightweight and breathable materials such as GORE-TEX® fabric and Polartec® fleece to keep warm. Nylon tends to get uncomfortable when it gets damp.
